Present Simple

The present simple (simple present) is the most common form of the verb "to be", it is used mostly to speak in the present. There are three different ways to write the present simple of the verb to be in affirmative sentences, depending on whether it is first, second or third person singular or plural.

For negative sentences, the word “not” is added to them. Each of these also has its own abbreviation to use when writing.


Past Simple

When you need to talk about the past in English, the main form that the verb takes is the simple past, and again its spelling changes. In the simple past, the verb to be is written in two different ways, these are "was" and "were", where both mean "was" or "was", where its use will depend on the subject of the sentence and its meaning, the context.
